Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Why Cicero Homeowners Choose HeatShield Chimney Cleaning
We provide independent Cicero HeatShield service throughout Cicero, IL, with a focus on the early-1900s masonry chimneys that dominate this town’s housing stock. Unlike a standard sweep, our HeatShield work involves camera inspection of the cast-in-place ceramic liner surface, removal of bonded creosote from the slightly textured ceramic, and honest condition reporting on delamination or top-plate separation when we find it. We are not affiliated with or authorized by HeatShield. We’re an independent service provider that works on these systems weekly, and Norm Sulecki has been on Cicero rooftops for close to twenty years. Call (866) 361-2607 to schedule.
Why Trust Wexford Chimney Sweep for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?
HeatShield is a cast-in-place flue liner restoration system, not a drop-in appliance. It behaves differently inside a chimney than a stainless liner or raw clay tile, and that difference matters when you’re sweeping it, inspecting it, or deciding whether it’s still safe. Our crew knows the ceramic-and-refractory mortar behavior, cure times, and how the liner interfaces with existing clay tile. That’s not something you pick up from a one-page product sheet.
Norm grew up a few blocks from the Hawthorne Race Course in Cicero and has been working on chimneys in this part of Cook County for going on two decades. He learned heating systems and venting at Triton College in River Grove, then spent years on roofs before starting Wexford. The approach has always been the same: tell the homeowner exactly what the camera shows. Not what generates the bigger ticket. When we sweep a HeatShield-lined flue, our HeatShield in Berwyn and Cicero work means we’re looking for delamination, surface cracking, water intrusion at the top plate, and glaze buildup on the cast surface. If it’s sound, we say so. If it’s not, we show you the images and explain the repair path.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Cicero
These are the conditions we actually encounter on HeatShield-lined flues in Cicero’s brick two-flats and bungalows. Not every HeatShield liner develops problems. But when one does, it’s usually one of these:
- Ceramic liner delamination from improperly prepped clay tile. HeatShield’s ceramic is cast directly against the original clay tile liner. If that clay wasn’t thoroughly cleaned and primed before the pour, the ceramic bond can fail over time, creating sheets of material that separate from the tile substrate. We find this most often in chimneys relined during rushed flips or by crews that skipped the prep stage. A camera inspection shows the separation clearly.
- Surface cracking from gas-conversion thermal stress. A flue sized for a wood-burning fireplace burns much cooler when a gas insert is installed without resizing the liner. The cast ceramic surface cycles differently than it was designed for, and hairline cracks start appearing along the liner walls. In Cicero, where many pre-1930 homes were converted from coal to gas decades ago, this is one of the more common HeatShield failure modes we document.
- Creosote glaze bonding to the cast surface. HeatShield’s slightly rougher ceramic texture grips soot and creosote faster than smooth clay tile. If a homeowner skips a season or two of sweeping, especially with high-resin woods or dampered-down overnight burns, the creosote can glaze hard. Standard nylon brush sweeps struggle with it. We use the appropriate rod and head combination to break the glaze without gouging the ceramic.
- Top plate and crown separation letting water behind the liner. On exterior chimneys, the point where the HeatShield ceramic meets the top plate is vulnerable. Cicero’s freeze-thaw cycles work that joint loose, and water wicks down behind the ceramic layer. You won’t always see it from the ground. We find it during Level 2 inspections on two-flats with chimneys on the party wall or exposed to full lake-effect weather.
- Spalling at the smoke chamber transition. The area where the flue tile narrows into the smoke chamber takes a beating on older masonry chimneys. If the original fireclay in that transition was deteriorated when the HeatShield was installed, the new liner can’t fix the underlying masonry movement. We’ll identify it on camera before it becomes a structural problem.
HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
When a HeatShield liner needs restoration work, we use the genuine ceramic refractory and resurfacing mortar specified for the system. Knockoff aftermarket mixes don’t cure to the same density and shrink differently inside the flue, which defeats the purpose of the original cast-in-place design. We don’t cut that corner.
That said, we also don’t default to expensive work. Where a HeatShield service in Stickney or Cicero area liner is already failing, we run a camera inspection and give an honest call on three paths: resurfacing the existing ceramic if the damage is localized, a full stainless reline if the liner has failed structurally, or leaving it alone with a documented inspection if it’s still serviceable. You get the camera images. You see what we see. If you’re unsure whether your current liner needs attention, call (866) 361-2607 and we’ll take a look.
Our HeatShield Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. We start with a Level 2 inspection when a HeatShield liner is involved, not just a visual look down the flue. Camera goes in from the roof and from the cleanout if accessible. We document the ceramic surface condition, check the top plate and crown interface, and verify the liner is still bonded to the original tile.
- 2
Cleaning or creosote removal. If the liner is sound, we sweep it with equipment matched to the cast ceramic surface. Glazed creosote gets chemical treatment and mechanical removal without scoring the liner.
- 3
Repair or resurfacing. If we find localized cracking, delamination, or top-plate separation, we quote the specific repair: genuine HeatShield resurfacing mortar for small areas, crown restoration where water entry is the problem, or a full stainless reline when the ceramic has failed past the point of patching.
- 4
Verification. After any repair or resurfacing, we re-run the camera so you can see the final condition. No vague “should be fine now” notes. You get before-and-after documentation.
- 5
Warranty-safe record. We document everything in a written report, which matters if the system is still under a HeatShield installer warranty. Independent service doesn’t void coverage when the work is done properly and documented.

AfterHeatShield Products We Service & Install in Cicero
We work on the full HeatShield system lineup in Cicero, including the HeatShield Ceramic Liner for cast-in-place flue restoration, HeatShield Resurfacing Mortar for deteriorated clay tile, HeatShield Crown and top-plate restoration components, and HeatShield-insulated stainless relining where a masonry flue needs a structural liner beneath the ceramic work. That last application matters in Cicero specifically, where original coal-era flues are often undersized for modern gas appliances. The insulated stainless path solves the sizing problem without tearing out the entire masonry stack.
We Also Service These Brands
HeatShield is one system in a broader toolkit. We also stock and install DuraFlex flexible stainless liner systems for full relines and Gelco caps and covers for chimney termination work. If a HeatShield liner has failed past the point of resurfacing, a DuraFlex stainless reline is often the right call, and we handle that in-house too.
FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Service in Cicero
Is Wexford Chimney Sweep authorized by HeatShield?
No, we are an independent HeatShield service provider. We are not affiliated with or authorized by the manufacturer. What that means for you is that our recommendation is based on what the camera shows, not on protecting a manufacturer relationship. We use genuine HeatShield materials when repair or resurfacing is needed, but our assessment of your liner’s condition is fully independent.
Do you use the genuine HeatShield ceramic mix, or is aftermarket fine?
We use the genuine HeatShield ceramic refractory and resurfacing mortar specified for the system, every time. Aftermarket mixes don’t cure to the same density and shrink differently inside the flue, which can create new separation problems within a season or two. On a cast-in-place liner, the chemistry matters. We don’t experiment with substitutes on your chimney.
How long does HeatShield chimney service take in Cicero?
A standard cleaning and inspection on a HeatShield-lined flue runs about 90 minutes to two hours. If we’re doing resurfacing work, that’s typically a same-day job with cure time factored in. A full stainless reline beneath a HeatShield system is a separate visit, usually a half day or more depending on access and flue size. We’ll give you a clear time estimate when we book.
What HeatShield models and series do you cover?
We service the full HeatShield lineup: the Ceramic Liner system for cast-in-place restoration, Resurfacing Mortar for deteriorated clay tile, Crown and top-plate restoration components, and HeatShield-insulated stainless relining applications. If you have an older installation and aren’t sure which product was used, the camera inspection will tell us.
Will independent service void my HeatShield warranty?
It shouldn’t, provided the work is performed correctly and documented. Many HeatShield installations carry an installer warranty, and routine cleaning and inspection by an independent company doesn’t void that coverage. What does cause problems is undocumented work or repairs done with non-specified materials. We provide a written condition report with every service, which protects your position if a warranty claim ever comes up. Call (866) 361-2607 if you have a specific warranty question.
How much does HeatShield chimney cleaning cost in Cicero?
HeatShield chimney cleaning in Cicero typically runs between $200 and $400 depending on flue condition, accessibility, and whether glaze removal or Level 2 camera documentation is included. If we find liner damage that needs repair, that’s quoted separately after you’ve seen the camera images. Call (866) 361-2607 for an exact quote. Estimates are free.
